A very sad and touching story about the loss of the third cub. But glad the other two survived and hope the male will stay away. Lovely capture!!!

Great nature photography Aaron, sad read though... nature's delicate balance can sometimes appear cold... 😊lf

It's part of the story. Thanks very much, DJ

I was very touched by your experience with the mom and her cubs! Nature is brutal and harsh, but the beauty outweighs the sometimes cruel and unforgiving realities! Love the image Aaron!

Aaron Whittemore replied:

Thanks very much, Fraida. You are so right. Beauty and brutality, hand in hand. V/F

Artist's Description

Though it is not unusual for Grizzly cubs to suffer a high mortality rate, it is very difficult to watch first hand. One morning I was watching and photographing Obsidian and her three gorgeous new cubs, when unexpectedly and much to the shock of those watching, a large boar grizzly rushed the family from cover and chased them into a grove of thick pines. After a short wait only Obsidian emerged, she was frantic and wandering the area erratically, this continued for the remainder of the day. We feared the worst. The next morning we were quite relieved when Obsidian emerged with her surviving cubs. Though the grieving continues, for the precious blond faced cub she lost in that brutal attack. Photographed in Yellowstone National Park.

Some so-called "wildlife" photographers, make their reputations selling images of captive, and baited animals and birds posed by professional handlers, and photographed at game farms, and various pre-selected scenic locations. All my wildlife images are of wild animals only, and are the result of countless hours, days, weeks...etc of effort. Each photo, whether from the Rocky Mountain West, or the oceans of the world will contain wild animals only. Every image on my site represents a reward for being patient and prepared, but more importantly a memory of time well spent admiring Gods creation. Watermarks will not appear on products purchased through "Fine Art America". All...
