Description
Though it is not unusual for Grizzly cubs to suffer a high mortality rate, it is very difficult to watch first hand. One morning I was watching and photographing Obsidian and her three gorgeous new cubs, when unexpectedly and much to the shock of those watching, a large boar grizzly rushed the family from cover and chased them into a grove of thick pines. After a short wait only Obsidian emerged, she was frantic and wandering the area erratically, this continued for the remainder of the day. We feared the worst. The next morning we were quite relieved when Obsidian emerged with her surviving cubs. Though the grieving continues, for the precious blond faced cub she lost in that brutal attack. Photographed in Yellowstone National Park.

Beautiful yet sad. Nature can be brutal as we all know. Wonderful photography, Aaron. l/f

A very sad and touching story about the loss of the third cub. But glad the other two survived and hope the male will stay away. Lovely capture!!!

Great nature photography Aaron, sad read though... nature's delicate balance can sometimes appear cold... 😊lf

I was very touched by your experience with the mom and her cubs! Nature is brutal and harsh, but the beauty outweighs the sometimes cruel and unforgiving realities! Love the image Aaron!

Thanks very much, Fraida. You are so right. Beauty and brutality, hand in hand. V/F
