Description
Slipper lobsters are nocturnal feeders, hiding in caves, caverns, and rocky crevices by day. They have an exoskeleton which functions as armor. In order to grow, the Slipper Lobster must periodically shed the old exoskeleton and grow a new one, during this transition, or molt, is when these lobsters are most vulnerable to predation. Hiding deep in cracks, and crevices is necessary until the new shell hardens. Their flattened bodies, allow the Slipper Lobster to navigate tight confines, and cling to the walls of caves where they reside. Photographed in Hawaii.
