Description
The Spanish Shawl Nudibranch found on the Pacific coast of North America features fabulous colors. The body is purple, the fringe or cerata, is brilliant orange, and the rhinophores are red. The fringe or cerata are an extension of the digestive workings of the nudibranch, and contain the poisonous mechanisms of the anemones and other venomous creatures they consume. The bright colors serve as warning to predators of their toxic nature. Photographed in the Sea of Cortez near the Midriff Islands of Mexico.
